In a matchup of unbeatens in Baltimore City action, City College junior guard Nick Faust had a relative off night shooting, but when the game was on the line he came through in the clutch. Faust scored 8 of his 19 points in the 4th quarter, including a huge three pointer and four consecutive foul shots in the closing seconds to lead the Knights to a 71-68 victory over an Edmonson team that just wouldn't go away.
Jordan Latham led City with 20 points and 8 rebounds, Michael Cheatham added 19 pts. and Charles Tapper had a productive game off the bench with 10 pts. and 9 rebounds.
Edmonson had 4 players in double figures with Kavon Pyatt leading the way with 16 pts., Jerry Lovelocke with 15, Sean Thomas with 14 and Wayne Mobley adding 10.
City got off to a slow start in front of it's home crowd as it took them almost 3 minutes to get on the scoreboard, but their defense kept them in the game as the most they ever trailed by in the 1st quarter was 4 points. Cheatham and Lovelocke each had 6 points in the quarter and after 1 the game was tied at 14.
The 2nd quarter went back and forth as there were 4 ties and 6 lead changes in the quarter. After trailing 23-22 City went on a 7-0 run, led by Cheatham and Latham, to take their largest lead of the half at 29-23. Pyatt then when on his own 5 point run to tie things up at 30, yet City went to the half leading 34-31.
City maintained their slim lead throughout most of the 3rd until late in the quarter when they went on a 7-0 run, capped off by a three point play from Latham, to lead 49-41. Again, Edmonson had an answer as they closed the quarter on a 5-0 run of their own to get within 3 to start the fourth.
City got up by 7 early in the final quarter, but a three pointer by Lovelocke and a steal and a layup from Pyatt got Edmondson within 2 at 54-52. On the next City possession Tapper was fouled by Lovelocke driving to the basket, which was his 5th foul. On his way off the court Lovelocke pulled off his jersey, which got him a technical foul call. Tapper converted on 3 of his 4 foul shots and Faust nailed a long 3 pointer as the Knights turned it into a 6 point possession and an 8 point lead with 4:20 remaining.
Stanton Kidd and Mobley scored on consecutive possessions to get the Red Storm within 4, and when Pyatt converted on a three point play with 2:30 to play Edmonson was back within 2 at 61-59. Trailing by 2 with just a minute left and the ball in their possession Edmonson had a chance to tie, but Mobley stepped out of bounds while driving to the basket. He made up for his mistake on the defensive end as he intercepted a pass as City was trying to move the ball past halfcourt, and fed a streaking Pyatt who was fouled on the play. Pyatt made both foul shots and the game was all tied at 65 with 43 seconds remaining.
This is when it was Faust time. He was fouled on City's next possession and made both shots to give the Knights a 67-65 lead. On Edmonson's next possession Pyatt missed a shot from inside the lane, Tapper grabbed a huge rebound and he handed the ball off to Faust who was intentionally fouled with 20 seconds left. Again, he made both foul shots and that was all she wrote for Edmonson's undefeated season, as they fall to 10-1. With the win City moves to 9-0 and some huge out of conference matchups this weekend at the Mayors Academy at Morgan State.
