All the talk coming into the 2nd annual Maryland Crab Bowl, featuring all stars from the Baltimore area against ones from the Washington D.C. area, was about the stellar quarterbacks being show cased in this years event, especially Arundels Billy Cosh. Someone forgot to tell the guys on the defensive side of the ball as both teams got spectacular play on that side of the ball, unfortunately for the Baltimore side D.C's came up with the bigger plays. The D.C defense picked off 5 passes, returned 2 for touchdowns and came up with a heroic stand in the last 21 seconds to seal the victory for the 2nd straight year 24-21.

Cosh came into the game with all the accolades, co-offensive player of the year in the Baltimore area, 12 state passing records and a scholarship to Kansas State, but finished with a rather uneven performance as he did complete 29 of his 52 passing attempts for 277 yards with 3 touchdowns, yet also had 4 interceptions.

On the opening possession Cosh led the Baltimore unit across midfield, but on a 3rd and 4 play he overthrew his receiver and D.C.'s Louis Young(Good Counsel) picked off the pass and sprinted 72 yards down the left side line for the early 6-0 lead.

Two series later D.C.'s Axel Ofori(Gaithersburg) intercepted a Cosh pass and returned it to the Baltimore 32 yard line. Marcus Coker(Dematha) scored 3 plays later on a 24 yard run, but it was called back on a holding penalty, and the drive stalled after that.

After a couple of three and outs Baltimore took over at it's own 20 and Josh Bordner(Century) was in at quarterback. He didn't fare much better as his 2nd play from scrimmage was intercepted by Lorenzo Waters(Dematha) who returned the pass 30 yards for another D.C. touchdown. A Rudy Johnson(McDonough) pass to Khalek Shepherd(Gwynn Park) converted the 2 point play and the lead was 14-0 with 10:34 left in the 1st half.

After the Baltimore team went 3 and out the D.C. team got another big play, this time on the offensive side of the ball. Running back Brian Lucas(Damascus) took a handoff around the right side, ran over a few defenders, and rumbled 65 yards down the side lines to give his team a 21-0 lead, and it looked like the rout may be on.

Not with Cosh on your side. On their next possession Cosh led his Baltimore team to a quick strike 4 play, 60 yard td drive in less than 2 minutes, capped off with a 32 yard scoring strike from Cosh to Matt Robinson(Atholton). D.C. quarterback Jerry Lovelocke(Edmonson) mishandled the snap on their next possession and a slew of Baltimore defenders landed on the ball at the D.C. 27 yard line. This time it only took Cosh 2 plays, a 22 yard pass to his Arundel teammate R.J. Harris and a 5 yard scoring pass to Ryan Dixon(Linganore), and just like that the Baltimore team was right back in the game, trailing just 21-14.

D.C. got a 42 yard field goal from John Carpenter(Allegany) right before the end of the half and went to the half with a 24-14 lead.

The Baltimore defense was outstanding in the second half as they held the D.C. team to just 25 yards of total offense in the half, while not allowing D.C. a single drive of over 5 plays. After Cosh and Harris connected on a 23 yard scoring pass to get Baltimore within 3, at 24-21, the defense even gave them a great opportunity to take the lead. Josh Alaeze(Dunbar) forced a fumble and Andre Monroe(St. Johns) recovered it for the Baltimore team at the D.C. 20 yard line with 4:20 left in the game. Cosh got his team down to the 8 yard line but on a 3rd and goal A.J. Bowman(Good Counsel) came up with the 5th interception of the game, and the 4th off Cosh, to end that scoring chance.

Cosh would get one last chance though as the defense held D.C. to another 3 and out, and after a booming punt and a 15 yard illegal participation penalty, he had the ball in his hands with 2 minutes to play and 78 yards to go. He was very effective with the short-intermediate passses and he marched the Baltimore team down to the 11 yard line with 21 seconds left to play. After 2 incomplete passses the Baltimore team chose to hand the ball off to Zach Zwinak(Linganore), the Gatorade Md. state player of the year, and it seemed as though they were going to kick a field goal and head to overtime. After a couple of timeouts they sent the offense back out on the field and put the game in the hands of Cosh. It was not meant to be, as his pass to Dixon in the back of the end zone sailed high and the D.C. players celebration began.

Zwinak, who finished with 68 yards rushing and 38 yards receiving, was named the Baltimore team MVP. Louis Young was named the D.C. team MVP. Alaeze and Bowman were named co-lineman of the game.
